Skip it as a first-timer base: Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon and every palace sit 30–40 minutes north on a packed Line 2, and you'll resent the commute by day two — Myeongdong solves that. Who it's for — and who should avoid it
Gangnam is new Seoul: glass towers, 12-lane boulevards, the K-pop agencies, the beauty clinics, and almost every true 5-star hotel in the city. If your trip is a K-pop pilgrimage, beauty treatments, a convention at COEX or simply the best bed money can buy, base here — it does luxury and polish better than anywhere north of the river, and Bongeunsa temple sitting directly opposite the COEX towers is the single best old-vs-new photo in Seoul.
Avoid it if this is a first trip built on palaces, hanok alleys and markets. All of that is 30–40 minutes north — Line 2 from Gangnam Station at rush hour is an experience you only need once — and Gangnam's blocks are long, corporate and dull to walk compared with Insadong or Hongdae. Budget travelers should leave immediately: the same $90 that gets a bland Gangnam 3-star gets a great room in Hongdae. Things to do in Gangnam
COEX and the Starfield Library. The two-story library atrium inside Starfield COEX Mall is free, open ~10:30–22:00, and photographs far better than a mall has any right to. The aquarium next door (~₩33,000) is a solid rainy-day or with-kids fallback. Line 9 to Bongeunsa Station drops you straight inside.
Bongeunsa temple. Directly across the road from COEX: a working 1,200-year-old temple with a 23 m stone Buddha framed by glass towers. Free, open dawn to evening, and genuinely calm even on weekends. Do the library and the temple back-to-back — it's the best free hour in Gangnam.
Jamsil baseball nights (Apr–Oct). LG Twins or Doosan Bears at Jamsil Stadium is the best-value night out south of the river: seats from ~₩15,000, fried chicken and beer in the stands, and cheering sections that treat every inning like a concert. Zero baseball knowledge required. The guided game-plus-dinner package (~$60) handles tickets and seats for you.
Garosu-gil. The tree-lined shopping street in Sinsa is Gangnam at its most walkable — designer flagships, cafes at ₩7,000 a pour, and better people-watching than the main boulevards. Line 3, Sinsa Station, Exit 8. Come mid-afternoon, then cross the river for dinner in a neighborhood with more soul — our food guide has the picks.

Is Gangnam or Myeongdong better to stay?

How far is Gangnam from the main sights?
Far. Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon and Insadong are 30–40 minutes by subway with a transfer, and rush hour on Line 2 (07:30–09:30, 18:00–20:00) is standing-room crush. N Seoul Tower is a similar haul. That commute, twice daily, is the whole case against basing here.
Is Gangnam expensive?
Yes, by design. Hotels run $130–500, cocktails ₩18,000–25,000, and Garosu-gil is flagship-priced. The free wins: Starfield Library, Bongeunsa temple, and K-Star Road's photo ops. Eat one street back from any main boulevard and dinner drops to normal Seoul prices.
Is Gangnam safe at night?
Very — it's a wealthy business district with cameras and police presence everywhere, and the subway runs to ~24:00. Standard big-city rules around Gangnam Station's club strip on weekends; that's the only part that gets messy.
