in Gangnam

COEX and the Starfield Library. The towering bookshelf atrium inside Starfield COEX Mall is free and photographs far better than a mall has any right to. SEA LIFE COEX, the aquarium in the same mall (about ₩35,000 at the gate, less online), is a solid rainy-day or with-kids fallback. Line 9 to Bongeunsa Station (Exit 7) or Line 2 to Samseong (Exit 5 or 6) connects underground into the mall.

Bongeunsa temple. Directly across the road from COEX: a working temple founded in 794, with a 23 m stone Maitreya Buddha framed by glass towers. Free to enter and genuinely calm even on weekends — it's a working temple, so keep voices down near the halls. Do the library and the temple back-to-back; it's the best free hour in Gangnam.

Jamsil baseball nights (late March–October). LG Twins or Doosan Bears at Jamsil Baseball Stadium, four stops east of Gangnam on Line 2, is the best-value night out south of the river: outfield seats from ₩10,000–11,000 (about $8), fried chicken and beer in the stands, and cheering sections that treat every inning like a concert. Zero baseball knowledge required. The 2026 regular season runs into mid-October, then the playoffs; the guided game-plus-dinner package (from ~$85) handles tickets and seats for you.

Garosu-gil. The tree-lined shopping street in Sinsa (Line 3, Sinsa Station, Exit 8) is Gangnam at its most walkable — but it has thinned out: the Sinsa Station district's shop vacancy rate hit 18% in mid-2026, above its pandemic peak. Treat it as a mid-afternoon stroll for cafes and flagships rather than a destination, then cross the river for dinner in a neighborhood with more soul — our food guide has the picks.

K-pop photo stops. K-Star Road in Apgujeong Rodeo lines the street with 'GangnamDol' bear statues painted for K-pop groups — free, quick, and the obvious stop on a K-pop day.

Gangnam is new Seoul: glass towers, 12-lane boulevards, the K-pop agencies, the beauty clinics, and a deep bench of 5-star hotels around COEX and the main boulevards. If your trip is a K-pop pilgrimage, beauty treatments, a convention at COEX or simply a very good bed, base here — it does polish better than anywhere else in the city, and Bongeunsa temple sitting directly opposite the COEX towers is the single best old-vs-new photo in Seoul.

Avoid it if this is a first trip built on palaces, hanok alleys and markets. All of that is 30–40 minutes north — Line 2 from Gangnam Station at rush hour is an experience you only need once — and Gangnam's blocks are long, corporate and dull to walk compared with Insadong or Hongdae.
