Gangnam's DEPENDS: the megaclubs are genuinely world-class if that's your scene, and a ₩100,000 shrug if it isn't. Hongdae is the default answer on a first trip.
Soju, noraebang, chimaek — the rules
Soju is ₩5,000 at a restaurant and ₩1,500 at a CU convenience store — and drinking at the plastic tables outside a convenience store is legal, normal, and a legitimate Seoul night out in itself. Etiquette when drinking with Koreans: pour for others, never for yourself; receive pours with both hands; the first shot of the night goes down in one. Nobody expects a tourist to be perfect — the both-hands move alone earns instant goodwill.
Noraebang — private karaoke rooms at ₩15,000–20,000 per hour for the room, not per person — is the mandatory second act of a Korean night. English songbooks are standard, tambourines are provided, and what happens in the room stays in the room. Hongdae's coin noraebang variants charge ₩500–1,000 a song if you only need a 20-minute burst.
Chimaek — fried chicken and draft beer, ~₩20,000 for two — is how nights start (19:00, before the club) or end (03:00, after it). And if clubs aren't your thing at all: the best first night out in Seoul is a baseball game at Jamsil — ₩15,000 seats, beer vendors in the aisles, cheerleader-led chants for three hours. Is Seoul safe at night?
Yes — Seoul is one of the safest big cities on earth to walk through at 03:00, and people routinely leave phones and laptops on cafe tables. Normal city sense still applies (watch your drink, ignore club touts in Itaewon), but violent street crime is genuinely rare. Solo women go out in Hongdae as a matter of course.
How do I get home after the subway stops?
The subway shuts around midnight — roughly 24:00, earlier on Sundays. After that, taxis: cheap and everywhere, ₩10,000–20,000 across most of the city, hailed with the Kakao T app (street-hailing at 02:00 in Hongdae is a contact sport). Or commit to the Korean method and stay out until the first train at ~05:30.
What's the drinking age in Korea, and do I need ID?
19 — in practice, born 2007 or earlier drinks legally in 2026. Clubs check foreign passports at the door, and a photo of your passport is frequently rejected; carry the real thing. Bars and convenience stores rarely check anyone obviously over 25.
Do Seoul clubs have dress codes?
Gangnam megaclubs, yes: no shorts, no flip-flops, sneakers are a coin flip — dress like you mean it or get turned away at the ₩30,000 door. Hongdae clubs don't care as long as you're wearing shoes. Itaewon sits in between; its cocktail bars run smart-casual.
