Under 30 or here for the nightlife: Hongdae, which runs until dawn, undercuts Myeongdong on price and sits right on the AREX airport line. Booking without overpaying
Book the location first, the hotel second. In Seoul the neighborhood decides your trip — a mediocre hotel in Myeongdong beats a great one stranded two transfers from everything. Once you've picked your area from the table, filter by 'within 5 minutes of a subway station' and check which line it's on: Line 2 or Line 4 access is worth paying $10–20 a night more for, because they're the lines your whole itinerary runs on.

Is staying near any subway station enough?
Almost — but the line matters more than the distance. Lines 2 and 4 carry most of a tourist itinerary (Line 3 handles the palaces); a hotel on a minor line can quietly add 20–30 minutes and a transfer to every single outing. Rule of thumb: within 5 minutes of a Line 2 or Line 4 station beats within 1 minute of anything else. Our transport guide covers the network.
Do Seoul hotels actually sell out?
In two windows, yes: cherry-blossom weeks (late March to mid-April) and autumn foliage (late October to early November). Myeongdong and Hongdae go first, and prices climb with demand. Booking-site data puts Insadong's April average at nearly three times its January one. Book 2–3 months ahead for those windows on refundable rates, so there's no downside. The rest of the year, 2–3 weeks ahead is plenty.
Should I split my stay between two neighborhoods?
Not on a trip under a week — a mid-trip hotel move burns half a day of packing, checkout and re-orientation for marginal gain, since everything is 20–40 minutes apart by subway anyway. Base in one place and visit the others. A split earns its keep only on 8+ day trips, e.g. five nights north of the river then three in Gangnam.
Is Airbnb worth it in Seoul?
Usually not for short stays. Seoul's hotels are good value and consistent, and the apartment market has been reshaped: since 1 January 2026, Airbnb only takes bookings in Korea for hosts who have submitted a business registration, a rule expected to push some 30,000 unlicensed listings (officetels among them) off the platform. If you want space or a hanok stay, book a registered hanok guesthouse rather than a private apartment. For a standard 3–5 night trip, a Myeongdong or Hongdae hotel wins on every axis.
