Myeongdong:
eat, shop, stay?

Eat your way down the street-food market (every evening). Carts roll out along the main streets in the late afternoon, the crowd peaks in the early evening, and it winds down late at night. Tornado potatoes are ₩4,000, gyeranppang egg bread ₩2,000–3,000, hotteok about ₩2,000 and grilled lobster tail with cheese about ₩20,000. Budget ₩15,000–25,000 and graze — it beats most sit-down dinners nearby. Stalls are supposed to post their prices (a rule brought in after the 2023 overcharging stories), so check the sign before you order. Some carts take cards, many don't: carry cash.

Shop K-beauty. This is the neighborhood of big Olive Young stores, brand flagships and 10-step skincare hauls, with on-the-spot tax refunds at the larger shops — bring your passport.

Personal color analysis — the K-beauty consultation where a stylist drapes you in fabric swatches and tells you your season — is best booked at least a few days ahead; the Myeongdong studios are the convenient ones. It's a genuinely fun 80–100 minutes if you're skincare-curious, an expensive novelty if you're not.

N Seoul Tower: it's a 10-minute walk from Myeongdong Station Exit 3 to the Namsan cable car (₩15,000 return). Go at sunset and read our verdict on whether the ₩29,000 observatory ticket is worth it (spoiler: the free terraces might be enough).

NANTA, the non-verbal kitchen-percussion show, has one of its two Seoul theaters here (3F UNESCO Building), usually with two shows a day — pick a time when you book. Box-office seats are ₩50,000–70,000 and online resellers undercut that; our verdict is that it's the best rainy-evening backup in the city for families.

Myeongdong is Seoul with the difficulty turned down: bilingual signage, on-the-spot tax refunds in the big stores, and a grid you can't get lost in. That's exactly why first-timers should stay here — and why some travelers find it sterile. This is the neighborhood of skincare hauls and street snacks, not hidden wine bars.

Avoid it if: you're here mainly for nightlife (Hongdae runs until dawn; Myeongdong goes quiet late at night), you want hanok-alley atmosphere (Insadong and Bukchon are your answer), or you've done Seoul before — repeat visitors are happier in Hongdae or Seongsu.
