First-timers: Myeongdong. Every classic first-trip morning — Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, Namsan — starts closer to your bed, and after a 12-hour flight, 'everything is 15 minutes away' is worth more than any bar.
Under 30, traveling with friends: Hongdae, no debate. You'll be out when Myeongdong is shuttered, the beds are cheaper, and walking home beats a ₩15,000-ish late-night taxi across town.
Families: Myeongdong — bigger rooms, flat streets, food kids recognize, and the NANTA theater around the corner for the jet-lagged evening. Hongdae at midnight is not where you want a stroller.
Couples: split call. Shopping-and-sights couples take Myeongdong; bar-hopping couples take Hongdae. If neither fits, the real answer might be Insadong for hanok charm or Itaewon for restaurants and rooftop bars.

Is Myeongdong or Hongdae better for first-time visitors?
Myeongdong. It's about 20 minutes by subway from Gyeongbokgung, two stops from the airport railroad at Seoul Station, and the nightly street market means dinner requires zero research. Hongdae only wins the first trip if nightlife is the trip.
How far apart are Hongdae and Myeongdong?
About 20–25 minutes: Line 2 from Hongik University six stops to Euljiro 1-ga plus a 5-minute walk, or a taxi of roughly ₩10,000–15,000. Close enough to stay in one and give the other an evening — which is exactly what we recommend.
Is Hongdae too loud to sleep in?
On the main drags near Exit 9, yes — Friday and Saturday run literally until dawn. Book toward Yeonnam-dong or the Hapjeong side and it drops to a hum. Light sleeper who still wants the scene? Sleep in Myeongdong, taxi home at 02:00.
Which is closer to Incheon Airport?
Hongdae, mildly: the AREX all-stop train calls at Hongik University Station directly (₩4,650, under an hour from Terminal 1), while Myeongdong means the AREX to Seoul Station and then two stops on Line 4 (about 75 minutes door to door) — or the 6015 airport bus (₩17,000), which stops at Myeongdong Station. What about staying in Gangnam instead?
Only if your trip points south — COEX conventions, K-pop offices, high-end shopping. Gangnam is 30–40 minutes from the palace side of town, which taxes every sightseeing morning. Tourists sleep north of the river; the full reasoning is at where to stay.
