The anchor is Pocheon Art Valley (₩6,000 entry): a granite quarry abandoned in the early 2000s, whose pit filled with spring water so green it looks color-graded, reopened as an arts park in 2009. A monorail (₩5,800 round trip, ₩4,800 one way) hauls you up the hill, then it's cliff faces, the lake viewpoint and a sculpture park — the quarry walls are the photo of the day, and in October they're turning.
The supporting cast: Herb Island (₩10,000 weekdays, ₩12,000 weekends; closed Wednesdays), a relentlessly kitsch Mediterranean-herb-garden theme park that flips from silly to charming when its light festival comes on after sunset. In autumn its hillside 'Sky Farm' turns pink with muhly grass, peaking from late September to mid-October. Tours add a fruit farm in between — strawberries in winter and spring, mini apples in autumn. On your own you could also add the Hantan River's Y-shaped suspension bridge (opened 2024), but the sights sit a drive apart, which is exactly why the tour bus wins.

There's no train to any of this. DIY means the subway to Uijeongbu (Line 1) or Dobongsan (Lines 1/7), a bus of well over an hour to Sinbuk-myeon, then a 30-minute walk, a taxi or local bus 73 — which comes about every two hours — to Art Valley, and another taxi to Herb Island. How do I get to Pocheon from Seoul without a car?
Slowly. There's no train: take the subway to Uijeongbu (Line 1) or Dobongsan (Lines 1/7), then a bus to Sinbuk-myeon (well over an hour), then a taxi of about 5 minutes or a 30-minute walk to Art Valley — local bus 73 covers that last stretch but runs only about every two hours.
